Stories

Welcome to the Story Pages. Below you will see a brief blurb about each short story and a link which will take you to the story itself.

I have been writing stories since I was tiny. At first it was simply because I had read all of the books in my elementary school's small library and I needed something to read. I began writing the stories that I thought my friends and I might like. While I never finished many of those early stories, they kept me entertained and out of trouble when I finished my schoolwork before class was over.

By the time I was in high school, I was serious about writing and was getting a little bit further in the writing of my novels. Unlike many early writers, I was never as interested in short stories as in the novel form. By my senior year of high school, I had written my first complete novel, only 35 pages handwritten (they were front and back, though), but around 200 typewritten (of course, the typewritten copy had more scenes!).

For my Master's thesis, I wrote a science-fiction cyberspace novel which started life as the short story, "Virtual Child." While the stories which appear in these pages are all self-contained short stories, I will eventually post a few short excerpts from the novel.

"Virtual Child"

The kernal for the novel, I've Heard Coyote's Howl, the short story centers around the life of a schoolchild whose family has bought their first virtual reality interface -- years behind all of his classmates. A gifted programmer even in late elementary school, Chris quickly finds himself in a little over his head and calls on a teacher/friend for help.

• 1993 Sigma Tau Delta award winning short story
• Published in Tender is the Net
"A Very Young Girl with Enormous Swings"

Inspired in part by the idea of Magical Realism, this fantastical tale deals with a young girl tired of the pendulum swing of her family's existence. When she finally takes matters into her own hands, the whole community is somewhat puzzled by what happens next.

• Published in Tattoo Highway 1998 (called "Megan's Wings" or "Megan's Flight")
"Mud-Walker"

This story is perhaps better heard than read silently -- but you have to use a thickish Texas accent. I'll try to add a RealPlayer file soon.

This is a story of voices. It's told by an adult recalling a day as a child. Set in Santa Fe, New Mexico during the early 1970s, this story chronicles a time when the white suburbanites were scared to death of the Native Americans whose land they now occupied. Jumping back and forth from the child's voice to the voice of the adult storyteller, we learn that the situation isn't quite as bad as the adults would have the children believe.

I've Heard Coyote's Howl
A science-fiction novel of the cyberspace, the novel details the lives of four young adults and their experiences in cyberspace. The novel blends many odd influences: Peter Pan and the life of its author, James Barrie, Southwestern Native American mythology, and cyberpunk.
Each of the young people and the cyberspace "cop" sent out to help them discover that they have more in common than they realized. Joined together to fight a new anomoly in the cyberspace, they must all trust each other and most of all, they must learn to trust themselves to neutralize the threat.
